The Jaega people were the earliest known inhabitants of the Lake Worth area. Former slaves Samuel and Fannie James were the first non-indigenous people to settle in Lake Worth in 1883. Originally called Jewel, the settlement was renamed Lake Worth after the body of water, which in turn was named after William J. Worth, a general in the Second Seminole War. The population and economy of Lake Worth blossomed with the rest of South Florida during the 20 th century.

Today, more than 35,000 people live in Lake Worth. The city boasts numerous elegant beaches, including the Municipal Beach, which is one of the few public beaches in Southeast Florida. Lake Worth is also an excellent surfing spot, and a popular destination for tourists. The city is famous as the home of the largest freestanding cross in Florida, which is more than 100 feet high.
